The Kalwall system puts
translucent unitized panels into an aluminum framing system.
The result is a translucent
panel system that has great flexibility of design, excellent
spanning ability and good insulation and shading values while
admitting natural spectrum light.
Materials
The Panel -
Facesheet - Developed and produced by Kalwall,
this facesheet incorporates features not available from any other
manufacturer. Sheets are manufactured up to 5' in width and up
to 20' in length.
Features include:
- UV Stable resins resist color change over the life
of the panel
-
- A fiberglass "Veil" integrated into the surface of
the exterior facesheet keeps the ends of the reinforcing fibers
from protruding through the surface as the panel wears over time.
A 25 year guarantee against "Fiber Bloom" is issued
with confidence.
-
- A variety of facesheets offer great durability and can
take impacts up to 230 Ft. Lbs. (60 Ft. Lbs. standard)
Grid - Aluminum "I" beams form
a grid pattern from 8" x 8" to 12" x 24".
The "I" beams are continuous in the direction of the
span. The cross span "I" beams are notched and fitted
to interlock with the spanning grid. Also available are composite
Thermal Break "I" beams for greater insulation values
without any loss of structural abilities.
Adhesive
- In a sense the adhesive is the heart of the system. Extremely
strong with a calculated bit of yield, the proprietary adhesive
makes the panel a unit and combines the strengths of the facesheet
with the strengths of the grid core to produce an extremely strong
durable panel.
The Composite Panel
- As a unit the
panel provides a light transmitting building envelope with good
insulation and strength values.
- - Capable of spanning 20+ feet as a roof or wall
- - Capable of being curved
as a vault or wall
- - Can be produced integrating
operable or fixed glass windows
- - Admits less than 1%
of U.V. wavelengths of light, protecting items while lighting
them with the full spectrum of visible light.
The
Framing System -
Frame - Aluminum extrusions form a perimeter
clamping system that allows some movement while maintaining a
watertight seal.

Battens - Clamping battens join panels into
large expanses
Lighting Quality - A distinct feature of the Kalwall
system is the Quality of the light filling the interior space.
Randomly oriented glass fibers in the exterior facesheet diffuse
the incoming light which then passes through the interior facesheet
being diffused even more. The resultant light is very even with
no "hot spots" or contrasting shadows. "Museum
Quality" is a term often used to describe the result. The
fact that almost no U.V. rays enter the space makes this description
very apt.
